Gerard Stamp - Architectural Portraits
18th April - 6th May

Gerard Stamp went to school under the shadow of Norwich Cathedral, where he developed a passion for drawing and painting architecture. After Art College he pursued a successful career in advertising, but always in the back of his mind was an iron determination to paint full time. In 2001 he achieved his ambition and built a studio near his home in North Norfolk.

Several years of hard work, experimentation, critical observation and self-doubt followed. Finally, in 2005, he held his first solo show in Norwich. The response (a sell-out) was extraordinary, selling to clients across the social spectrum from a Knight of the Garter to a student who took out a bank loan.

The following year he held his first London exhibition in Cork Street, a show which went on to be exhibited in York Minster. Dan Cruickshank describes Stamp's work as 'asking the same question - how can the essence of the beauty of ancient architecture be captured? Inspired by the word of JMW Turner, John Sell Cotman and John Piper, Stamp has found a way. He has honed the techniques - indeed pushes back the boundaries - of watercolour painting.'
