Performing Arts

Both music and drama are very strong at Gresham's and we are renowned for our exceptional abilities in both.

Our students benefit immensely from extensive performing arts facilities and from our committed and enthusiastic arts staff.

Outstanding opportunities exist for involvement in choral, instrumental and jazz performance. Twenty percent of our students sing in one or more of our five choirs; our Chapel Choir is over ninety members strong and our two chamber choirs perform regularly on the Norfolk circuit. The orchestra, string orchestra and concert band are involved in three major performances each year, and string, wind, percussion and brass ensembles perform regularly in small groups. Our three jazz bands are in high demand both on and off the campus.

Our Drama Department puts on several school productions each year, all of which involve large casts. These also provide ample opportunities for those interested in the technical aspects of theatre. Recent performances have included Sonheim's Follies, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Candide and an adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials novels.

The Auden Theatre provides an ideal venue for performance, offering a professional and versatile space. The range, scale and variety of performances to which our pupils have access provides a richness which makes us truly unique. Recent visiting musicians have included Tasmin Little, Peter Donahoe and Emma Kirkby, and the Theatre is also a very popular choice across a wide variety of professional theatre companies. Our unique Theatre in the Woods also provides a dramatic backdrop for outdoor performances.
