Working at Gresham’s
Gresham’s is an independent co-educational boarding school based in the beautiful Georgian town of Holt, in North Norfolk. Gresham’s is one of the largest employers in the Holt area employing over 400 staff in positions such as teaching and pastoral care, finance, administration, maintenance and catering. We take great pride in our reputation and recognise that this is built on the commitment and skills of our staff. The success of the School and the well-being of staff and its pupils depends very largely on co-operation, trust and respect between us.
In March 2016, the Nursery and Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School was awarded ‘excellent’ in all nine categories following an inspection by ISI Inspectorate. ‘Excellent’ is the ISI descriptor for the Ofsted term ‘outstanding’.
The School occupies a large campus across three sites: Nursery & Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools, with approximately 800+ pupils ranging from 3 years to 18 years. All adults working at Gresham’s should be aware of their responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of every pupil, both physical and emotional both inside and outside the school. This involves ensuring that pupils are protected from significant physical or emotional harm and having a positive commitment to ensure the satisfactory development and growth of the individual. Everyone working in the School should be aware of, and when necessary, to follow the School’s Child Protection Guidelines, which are in line with the Safeguarding Children’s Board (OSCB’s) practice and procedures.
Each member of staff is placed on the School’s pay scale according to their experience and position. The school provides a generous package to its employees which includes a school pension, free school meals (term time), free parking and Private Health Scheme (Contributory), and 25 days holiday for administration staff (full time). The School is committed to the development of its staff and all members of staff are asked to complete a PDR each year.

Dr Emma Fern studied History at undergraduate level, specialising in medieval history for postdoctoral research. For her doctorate she studied the early Anglo-Saxon Church. She decided to become a teacher during her PhD where she thoroughly enjoyed teaching undergraduates, and imparting her love of history to her students. Before arriving at Greshams’, she worked at Ampleforth College, York where she was the Assistant Housemistress in a flourishing girls’ boarding house for five years. She joined Gresham’s as a History Teacher in September 2012 and later became one of the visiting tutors in Edinburgh Girls’ Boarding House, as well as Head of Sixth Form. Dr Fern was appointed Housemistress of Edinburgh in September 2014.
