Britten Music Course
Britten Music Course 2017 – Tuesday 18 – Sunday 23 July 2017
Since its inception in 2010, the Britten Music Course (BMC) has given opportunities to talented young musicians to develop their skills, learn new repertoire, and perform at the highest standards.
The course, which will take place every July, is based at Gresham’s Prep School, and is fully residential. It is led by former Monteverdi Choir member Tom Appleton and Gresham’s own team of teaching, support, and boarding staff. Typically there are around 30 pupils aged between 8-13 years who attend the course each year, with Grade 3 being a prerequisite requirement in their first instrument and a love of singing. Such is the reputation that the BMC has built up, young musicians have been attracted to the course from across the UK, Europe, and the Middle-East. There is always a strong demand for places, so early booking is advisable. The dates for the 2017 course are Tuesday 18 – Sunday 23 July 2017 and will include a Come and Sing Carmina Burana for the participants and a specially formed adult choir on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July. The performance of this extraordinary work, in the School’s Chapel, will form part of the opening day of the Holt Festival.
During the six day long 2017 BMC, the participants will enjoy the usual mix of orchestral and choral workshops, have the opportunity to perform in both solo and ensemble concerts, and benefit from tuition from some of the country’s leading professional choral singers during the Come and Sing weekend. Further performance opportunities will be available when the participants visit Benjamin Britten’s homeland of Aldeburgh, Suffolk to give a recital on the iconic stage in Britten’s concert hall – Snape Maltings, and performing in a boat on Thorpeness Meare!
Alongside the exciting musical experiences on offer, participants can look forward to a wide range of activities in their free time such as ‘Mr. Tao’s impossible Quiz’, Film and Pizza Night, the Tidiest Dormitory Competition (!), a trip to one of our many stunning local beaches and many other opportunities such as rounders, tennis, table-tennis and time to play on our outdoor adventure playground.
The cost for this extraordinary week of music-making and fun is £350 including accommodation, food, tuition and music.
“Singing immaculately… magical and truly uplifting.”
