Inter-House Debating resumes

Gresham’s Inter-House Debating resumed with a Sixth Form socially distanced clash to a select bubble audience in Big School on 21st September. Queens’ (Molly and Sophia) proposed the motion This House believes ‘Rule Britannia’, Land of Hope, and Glory should continue to be sung at the Last Night of the Proms and Tallis (Andrew and Joe) opposed. A very well informed debate ensued which explored patriotism, Black Lives Matter, the legacy of Empire and slavery, and the role and impartiality of the BBC. Both teams were eloquent, persuasive, and listened to and responded to each other’s arguments. Tallis were victorious and process to the semi-finals but it was great to be back debating in at least the 120th year of debating at Gresham’s and this was an entertaining contest between two talented teams. Next week it is the turn of Woodlands proposing ‘This House would continue to work from home’ with Edinburgh opposing.
