House Debating Final

64_Debating_main_thumbWell done to the debaters of Britten and Tallis for producing a fantastic final in Chapel last night on the motion, ‘This House believes that, in the twenty-first century, religion is an unhelpful concept’.

There was not a weak performance amongst the four debaters who produced a stunning debate and one of the best finals we have had at Gresham’s for many years.  Both sides were erudite, adept at thinking on their feet and brought to the discussion a wonderful blend of sensitivity and intellectual flair.

It was hard to declare a winner, as the losing team might have triumphed in the competition most years.  In the end, though the team work, sophistication and charisma of the Britten team of Katie Francis (B) and Iona Rangeley-Wilson (B) just pipped the very strong, assured and consistent Tallis team of Charlie Williamson (T) and Tom Dowd (T).

Well done to both teams, and to all the pupils and staff adjudicators who took part in this year’s competition.  So the Senior Debating Trophy goes this year to Britten.
