Rugby

Rugby is the major game enjoyed by over 120 boys throughout the Michaelmas Term. Teams are run at U13 A and B, U12 A and B, U11 A and B, U10 A and B, U9 A and B and U8’s. Gresham’s Prep has rightly gained an enviable reputation for the strength and success of its teams as well as the continued success of individual players who have come through the school’s coaching ranks to win professional playing contracts and international representative honours.

Teams and individuals from the Prep School participate fully and very successfully in the local and regional sporting scene with inter-school fixtures at all age groups and across a range of abilities. Our aim is to give as many boys as possible the opportunity to represent their School. House matches provide additional competition and generate considerable support, excitement and, most importantly, enjoyment.

The school also has a tour most years to give the players the opportunity to play different opposition and also give them a chance to experience a touring environment. Recently we have toured London, the Midlands and Ireland.

The school has produced several boys that have gone on to gain International Caps at different levels. In recent times a number of boys have played for England Schools or Colts, most recently, Harry Simmons, who was selected for the 2016 England U18 and 19 sides. At present, one old boy is in the full England side and was part of the successful Lions tour to Australia. Ben Youngs is the current Leicester and England Scrum Half and his brother Tom Youngs also played for Leicester and England at Hooker. Tom was also the club captain of Leicester last year. Both played a full and important part in the famous win against the New Zealand All Blacks in 2012.
