Athletics is coached as part of the Physical Education programme. Pupils are introduced to events appropriate to their age and ability, and the better athletes are selected for the team squad.
The Senior squad are coached on a Monday and the Juniors (Under 12 and below) on a Thursday. A further opportunity to be coached, improve and compete is during activities in the Summer Term. Sports Day is a major event in the season and all pupils are fully involved in the House Competition.
Our normal competitive opportunities in a season consist of an eight school meeting hosted by Gresham’s where a series of ‘mini matches’ are organised against local Prep Schools in two age groups. The East Area Championships are held at Bedford, which qualify the athletes for the National Prep Schools Championships held at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham for Under 12, 13, and 14 athletes (Years 6, 7, and 8). Our Year 4 and 5 athletes compete in the East Junior meeting held at the UEA track in Norwich.
The School has earned considerable success in Athletics, for example, in the East Junior meeting in 2012, the School finished with twenty four podium places and nine winners. In the East Senior meeting there were eighteen podium places and ten athletes qualified for the National Championships. At the National Championships we ended with one Gold and four Silver medals.
In 2013 Gresham’s had twenty one podium places at the East Junior meeting. In the East Senior meeting eight athletes qualified for the National Finals and we finished with two Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal. In 2014 Gresham’s had twenty two podium places at the East Junior meeting. In the Senior meeting twelve athletes qualified for the National Finals and were awarded three Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals.
