Cricket

Cricket is the main Summer Term sport for boys and girls at the Prep School.

The School is regularly able to put out five boys’ teams at Under 13 and three teams at Under 11 levels with one Under 9 side also competing.

It is our intention that the structures exist for all boys who want to play for a team to represent the school at some stage during the term and we try very hard to ensure that this happens. In the process, our boys benefit from strong coaching delivered by committed, experienced and knowledgeable staff. Our fixture list has grown over the years but remains within the county of Norfolk. We have strong links with Norfolk County, with many current and former pupils having gained representative honours for the various county age groups.

Our 1st XI undertakes an annual tour to Yorkshire in June and contests the Worsley Cup Tournament where we take on seven strong Yorkshire Prep schools at St Martin’s, Ampleforth. We have also ventured further afield with two groups of senior players having toured South Africa.

The Under 11 team enjoys a weekend tour and recently has played in the Midlands and the South East of England.  A festival which includes local schools and clubs is also becoming a highlight of the Colts season and is organised by Gresham’s in early June.

Girls’ cricket

Cricket is now the main sport for Girls in the Prep school in the summer term. The girls initially learn the game through the kwik cricket format encouraging all players to develop batting, bowling and fielding skills. As their skills develop, coaching builds towards pairs and T20 match formats with the U13A team moving to some hard ball matches. Players are offered coaching throughout the year during activities sessions led by the school’s cricket professional (to be announced for 2017) and Level 2 coach and player Emily Woodhouse.

The girls currently have at least one session of cricket a week and play fixtures against a number of local schools including Norwich School, Wisbech Grammar, Taverham Hall Preparatory School and Kings Ely. There is also a girls’ cricket activity which runs throughout the Lent and Summer terms where the girls receive top class coaching from the Senior School cricket coaches as well as from volunteer coaches from the Norfolk Women’s cricket team.

The school benefits from having two senior and two junior squares on site and we are very grateful to a committed team of ground staff who keep our fine facilities in great condition. We make use of the extensive grounds at both the Prep and Senior school sites to ensure that matches can be played on pitches appropriate to the level of the players.

Both locally and internationally, the way in which Gresham’s Prep School has conducted itself on the cricket field over the years has made us many friends. Whatever the result, the spirit in which the game should be played has been upheld and as a result the game has contributed to both the sporting and personal development of generations of our pupils.
