Performing Arts

At Gresham’s Prep all pupils are encouraged to develop their self-confidence and creativity through the media of Drama, Dance and Physical Theatre.

Performing Arts is an inclusive subject where every child takes the opportunity to perform on stage for their annual year group production.  Pupils are also given the chance to audition for the Junior and Senior school plays.  These performances are considered by the children to be one of the highlights of their school year.

Classes are taught in the School Hall which converts into a theatre.  It is fully equipped with lighting and sound system, stage curtains, shadow curtain, dance practice floor and mirrored wall. We are fortunate to have an extensive range of additional performance spaces such as our excellent Auden Theatre, Scruff Shacks Studio Theatre and the Theatre in the Woods.

Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 enjoy a weekly double period of Performing Arts and Years 7 and 8 have one drama lesson.  They are practically focused and concentrate on exploring the use of the voice, improvisation skills, studying play texts and Physical Theatre.  Students in the junior years also benefit from learning dance/movement and choreographic techniques.

In addition to timetabled lessons all students are offered a variety of other extracurricular classes to further develop their skills and specific interests.  These include Drama, Ballet, Street-Dance, Contemporary Dance and specialist drama workshops for Years 7 and 8.

Pupils enjoy visits to the theatre in Norwich and excitedly welcome visiting professional practitioners into our school from world renown dance and theatre companies.

At Gresham’s we are committed to nurturing the interests of the individual whether their preference is performing on stage or helping design the set and lighting or assisting backstage.  We believe that Performing Arts is a valuable educational tool that can enhance every child’s self-confidence.  It provides them with a unique way to express themselves and their ideas whilst working with other students collaboratively to build their team work skills.
