Urban Soul Orchestra and Classic Ibiza come to Gresham’s

Stephen Hussey, Musical Director of Urban Soul Orchestra has begun working with Year 12 Music A-Level pupils to arrange music from the Classic Ibiza set list for a project involving musicians from across the county, who will play the pupils arrangements in a live concert on Saturday 18th June. The pupils are working in the Strathmore Studio using Logic to arrange the orchestral parts which will be distributed to pupils for workshops in the summer term.

Wicked Theatre Trip

36 pupils studying music at KS4 & KS5 went to see ‘Wicked: The Musical’ at London Victoria Apollo Theatre. Defying Gravity is a set work on the GCSE Syllabus, the musical links to the A-Level Music for Film & Media, and the broader approach of the IB for exploring music outside of their own personal context, pupils were able to experience the joy of live theatre once more and see the work studied come to life.

Music and Munch

This month’s Music and Munch celebrated string instruments. Some of our finest string players performed their pieces to a packed Tig’s in this Strings special.

Two soloists performed the well-known pieces Partita in E for violin by Bach and Sicilienne for cello by Paradis, in addition to the two duet pieces, a Mozart Divertimento for violin and viola and a Pleyel Duet for two violins. The String Ensemble completed the concert with an exciting performance of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart.

There is no Music and Munch next month due to the school holidays but we look forward to welcoming an audience on May 6th for more musical treats!

Piano Recital

15 pianists from across the Prep and Senior Schools had the opportunity to play the school’s Steinway A grand piano in the Fishmongers’ Recital Hall for the Piano Recital. They wowed the audience with lots of piano favourites, with pieces ranging from Chopin Nocturnes and a Beethoven Sonata to an Elegy by Einaudi and a Scott Joplin ragtime. It was an amazing showcase of the school’s pianists, and an enjoyable evening was had by all.

Thank you to Heidi Shinn, our Lead Keyboard Tutor, for putting together a fantastic programme.
