Netball is the major sport for girls in the Lent Term. Most girls in Year 9 and Year 10 play the sport, and six teams are fielded from these years.
Netball continues to be a very popular and successful sport in the senior years, with over seventy girls opting for the sport. There are six outdoor courts, and the indoor court in the Sports Hall has a newly installed specialist floor.
Fixtures are held on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Block fixtures involving up to ten teams ensure that a large number of girls have the opportunity to represent the School at a wide range of levels, from the athletic excellence of the 1st VII to the cheerful camaraderie of the 5th VII, and the ever increasing confidence of the Under 14C’s. The matches are played in a highly competitive manner with a large emphasis on a good standard of sport and a good standard of sportsmanship.
We play an extensive range of opponents: Framlingham College, Culford School, Wymondham College, The Perse, Norwich School, Ipswich School, and Bedford Modern School. The 1st VII has a regular fixture against the University of East Anglia’s 1st VII, travel to Oundle School and Brentwood for Under 19 tournaments, and represent Norfolk at the East Region Netball Competition. Junior B and C teams play local Schools as well as block fixtures, and senior girls play ladies’ club team fixtures.
Each Netball team has its own member of staff as coach and mentor throughout the entire season. We have exceptional staff for Netball at Gresham’s including former international sportswomen, professional specialist coaches, and committed academic staff. Several of our specialist coaches support the County Academy set up and umpire at a regional level. Coaching is led by Mrs Helene Buckingham, who has coached and played internationally. Helene takes on the role of Director of Netball at Gresham’s in January 2021. To read more about Helene’s appointment, please click here.
Barbados has been a popular choice for touring and has provided our top players with a challenging level of Netball, and a once in a life time chance to experience a different sporting culture. Tourists played at the National Stadium in Barbados, and in 2011 were the winners of a tightly fought match against the Barbados National Under 16 side. Our most recent Netball Tour was to Sri Lanka in February 2019; this was an exceptional cultural experience, with excellent Netball matches, and will be our first choice tour destination when we are able to travel again.
