The Design and Technology department is situated in the Cairns Centre alongside the Art and Photography departments.
Our facilities include two IT suites, one further classroom and large well equipped workshops where practical work of all types can be carried out. We also have a purpose built timber store and kiln where we season our own hardwoods sourced from the school grounds.
All pupils take DT in Year 9 where they undertake a broad variety of design and make projects. It is very much a foundation year introducing many new materials, processes and techniques.
Pupils who opt to continue at GCSE and A level have a choice of following the resistant materials or graphic design route. They have a wide choice of projects to undertake and independent learning is highly encouraged, and indeed necessary in order to do well. We use WJEC for our GCSE studies and Edexcel at A level.
Outside of timetabled lessons the department is well used for hobbies and personal pieces of practical work. Each year we build a Caterham 7 sports car which gives pupils from all year groups a great opportunity to learn the mechanics and techniques required to assemble a car from scratch.
The department is a busy working environment where pupils really have the chance to develop technical skills, and to put these into practice in a wide range of situations.
