The Library is central to teaching and learning within the Senior School, providing a wide range of resources to support the curriculum as well as a comfortable space for individual study, supervised study, teaching, revision and prep.
The main Library is situated between Tallis and Oakley Houses and is open and staffed throughout the school day including weekends. It has approximately 16,000 books, DVDs and CDs as well as newspapers, periodicals, online subscriptions and a developing e-library.
There is a separate Fiction Library located in the building opposite the Chapel, where pupils can relax, read and use the self-service borrowing facilities. Additional English resources are available in the English Critical Library and a separate History collection can be found in the Saltmarsh Room in Big School. The integrated online Library catalogue allows searching across all these locations.
The Librarian works closely with Heads of Department to ensure up to date stock is available to support all aspects of the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to ask for help with research, academic referencing or if they have a special request. The Library staff can also request material from other sources to support coursework, the extended essay, university reading lists or personal study. The Library also stocks up to date university entry, career, gap year, interview and CV guides.
Library induction sessions are held for all year groups, and the Librarian participates in the wider Gresham’s study skills programme, with the specific aim of developing pupils’ research and referencing skills.
The Library provides networked computers and WiFi so pupils can access the school intranet, search the catalogue, log into Clickview (video content), and access online subscriptions and research websites including JSTOR. Pupils can request e-books for use on the Library Kindles and iPads. The Library website is updated regularly and provides subject guides, study skills and research information, news and guidelines on using the Library. Printing, scanning and photocopying facilities are also available and pupils can drop in to the twice weekly IT Clinic for help with laptop or IT problems.
