Tallis Boarding House was named after Thomas Tallis who was Headmaster of Gresham’s from 1606 to 1640. The building, which is a purpose built boarding house, was opened on the 21st September 1963 by Sir Colin Anderson, Prime Warden of the Fishmongers’ Company.
Tallis offers dormitory accommodation for Year 9 and 10 pupils and individual purpose built study bedrooms for Year 11 and Sixth Form pupils, although Year 11 day boys will often share a bedroom. It provides plenty of privacy and well-kept bathrooms. The Head of House has his own larger study sitting/bedroom with en-suite facilities.
Tallis has its own games field which is very well used by the boys, particularly with the new football goals, a grass volleyball court and croquet lawn. It has two updated computer suites, wifi thoughout, a TV/pool room with Sky Sports and BT Sports, and a large common room/hall where table tennis, bar billiards and table football are popular activities. There is also plenty of seating for socialising. We run a number of in-house competitions and events for all the years to get to know each better such as an Oktoberfest party after October half term and some Mexican nights with associated entertainment such as quizzes, party games and films. Tallis has its own purpose built stage which is put to good use during the run of ‘Tallis Entertains’, a popular annual show put on by the boys and staff during the Lent term where we raise money for the School’s charity of the year and Help for Heroes. In May, the whole House, many staff and parents run to Sheringham for a dip in the sea followed by fish and chips, a great Tallis tradition. There are currently 69 boarders and day pupils in Tallis.
Paul Laidler, has been Tallis Housemaster since 2012. He is married to Suzanne and they have three children: George (7), Toby (5) and Emily (1), and two yellow Labradors, Jones and Archie (both 10). Paul was brought up in Newcastle, went to boarding school in Cambridge, then studied Physiology at Liverpool University and did his PGCE at Oxford University. Before being a Housemaster, Paul ran Science and Biology at Gresham’s and was a visiting tutor to Tallis. Before coming to Gresham’s he taught Biology, Chemistry, Physics and PE at Warminster School where he was also a resident tutor. He currently teaches Biology and Sports Science; tutors for biological specialisms including Medicine and Vet Science, coaches rugby and takes pupils for golf. Paul likes to walk and run with his dogs and is interested in most things biologically-related although primarily sports/medical physiology, he is also interested in archaeology and ancient civilisations, cathedral architecture and loves watching sports, especially rugby and Newcastle United.
The Resident House Tutor is Lawrence Tao, Head of Academic Music, School Organist and Tallis Year 9 Tutor. Mr Tao joined Tallis as House Tutor in January 2013. His formal duty night is on a Wednesday. Lawrence studied Maths, Music and Latin at Durham University and was then Organ Scholar at St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, before coming to Gresham’s in 2010. As well as being heavily involved in music at school he gives concerts on the piano and the organ both in local churches and further afield.
The Resident Matron is Beverley Aldridge. Mrs Aldridge has been the Matron in Tallis for the last thirteen years and is resident in the house five days a week. Her own four children were boarders at Gresham’s so she is very experienced in dealing with and looking after the Tallis boys!

Tallis has ‘HER’ rules: Honesty, Endeavour and Respect. The staff and the boys instil this in what we do. The House has a very vibrant community and spirit where the boys are encouraged to always do their best and occasionally come out of their comfort zone. The House Staff maintain a purposeful working atmosphere but also encourage the boys to pursue other interests both in and out of the House. Tallis has an enviable sporting record and has produced some fine debating teams. Ben and Tom Youngs (Leicester Tigers and England scrum half) are Tallis’s most notable old boys.
