Songs from the Shows 2022
25 March 2022

This is the day in our annual calendar when Gresham’s takes on Broadway and the West End and our talented pupils perform songs from their favourite musicals. A show that could run for days, given the breadth of material and the number of people wanting to take part, Songs from the Shows this year was a trip through the decades and genres of music, much of which is now firmly rooted in the ‘best of’ category in the Musical Theatre songbook.
Pupils from Year 9 – 13 took to the stage with many memorable performances, in full costume and impressively truly immersing themselves in the character for that moment under the spotlight. It would be unfair to highlight individual performances which included songs from well-known musicals Dear Evan Hansen, Miss Saigon, Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera, Grease and Shrek. Lesser known and older musicals were acknowledged too – Chess, Spring Awakening, Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel and Anything Goes. And the list goes on. Concert Band was a highlight with its Chicago Medley; who didn’t go home humming All that Jazz? The Sam Curtis Collective brilliantly accompanied the Anything Goes set.
The level of performance from each and every pupil was quite extraordinary and a proud moment for all those involved in working with the performers from page to stage. Commitment to rehearsals throughout the term shone through.
As the curtain falls on another packed term musically, our thanks goes to all those involved behind the scenes to produce such an ambitious show and of course to our pupils who whenever asked, rise to the occasion.
