Academic Enrichment series: the armed forces and society
16 September 2026

The next instalment in our Academic Enrichment Talk Series welcomed Major General Felix Gedney, a former member of the Armed Forces, who delivered an insightful and thought-provoking session to our Year 13 pupils on The Armed Forces and Society.
Drawing on his professional experience, Major Gedney encouraged pupils to consider why the United Kingdom maintains its Armed Forces and the role they play in protecting people, supporting national prosperity and projecting influence. The session explored contemporary security threats, the relationship between the Armed Forces and wider society, military leadership and accountability, and the place of defence within public spending.
Major Gedney also prompted pupils to think critically about how the Armed Forces differ from other institutions, opening a wider discussion about service, responsibility and the role of the military in a modern democracy.
The talk generated excellent engagement from the audience, with pupils contributing thoughtful questions and taking an active part in the discussion.
Thank you to Major Gedney for sharing his knowledge and experience, and for delivering another valuable contribution to our Academic Enrichment Talk Series.
