Dr Nick Prior: Mental health from different angles
24 September 2026

We recently welcomed OG Dr Nick Prior back to Gresham’s for an insightful and thought-provoking talk on mental health.
Combining professional expertise with candid personal reflection, Dr Prior explored the biological, psychological and social influences that shape mental wellbeing. He introduced pupils to a range of academic models, including the cognitive triangle linking thoughts, emotions and behaviour, while offering practical strategies for managing stress and supporting long-term wellbeing.
A particularly memorable idea was the distinction between mental health ‘weather’ and ‘climate’: our mood may change from day to day, while deeper patterns can develop over time. Drawing on his own experience of bipolar disorder, Dr Prior spoke with openness and generosity, helping to challenge stigma and encourage a more compassionate understanding of mental illness.
Pupils were highly engaged throughout, asking numerous perceptive and pertinent questions. We are extremely grateful to Dr Prior for sharing his knowledge and experiences, and for encouraging pupils to approach mental health with curiosity, kindness and informed reflection.
