At Gresham’s Prep our expectations are high and we encourage pupils to take risks and have pride in their work. The Maths team work together to help pupils to understand how mathematics works and how to explain and adapt it to different situations. Within Maths lessons, work comes in the form of written exercises, mental tasks, regular use of ICT and also through games and practical activities.
The vast majority of lessons are taught in the mornings and some lessons are taught in our dedicated ICT suite. Throughout the Prep School, maths is taught in ability groups by a dedicated team of specialist maths teachers.
Our overall aim is to ensure that Gresham’s Prep offers pupils to opportunity to:
- Enjoy learning Mathematics and understand its applications across the whole curriculum
- Be confident with their ability, develop resilience and understand that reacting to mistakes is the best way to learn and improve
- Be able to judge and apply the appropriate method needed to solve problems and challenges
Our pupils are given plenty of opportunities to test their mathematical skills in events such as ‘The National Primary Maths Challenge’ and ‘UKMT Junior Maths Challenge’ and we also run regular competitions and challenges within the school for whole year groups at a time.
Our mathematics programmes of study are based around the most recent National Curriculum schemes, but we aim for most of our pupils to be working way beyond National Curriculum expectations.
We offer comprehensive preparation for all pupils who are aiming to 11+ or 13+ entry to selective schools. We have strong links with many senior schools, in addition to Gresham’s, to ensure that our pupils are equipped with the knowledge, attitude and skills required to take their mathematical studies to their next destination when they leave Gresham’s Prep School.
