Our Chamber Choir, Schola Cantorum combined with EUCO – The European Union Chamber Orchestra – to give a wonderful concert last week. We were very fortunate indeed to share the platform with the remarkable pianist, Lauren Zhang, who played Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E flat : K.271 Jenamy.
Schola sang the first movement of Vivaldi’s Gloria. Singing with such a brilliant string sound was exciting. Then, also under the direction of our Director of Music John Bowley, they performed the recently composed piece The Ground, by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo (b.1978). This was a very different sound world to the baroque of Vivaldi, and combined piano with strings, which supported Schola’s singing creating a warm, comforting sound. Nordic music is very much in vogue at present, and Gjeilo is one of the composers driving this.
Later Lauren demonstrated why she is already such a star. At the age of 16, Lauren Zhang won the 2018 BBC Young Musician Competition. She is in demand as a soloist throughout the UK and further afield, and so it was a particular treat to be able to lure her to North Norfolk.
This concert was certainly one for the memory banks.
